Beginning a leisurely evening meal at this charming 17th-Century country inn, we chose our starters from the carefully constructed menu. We decided on the oven-baked stuffed cup mushroom and the coquilles St Jacques - a scrumptious mixed seafood dish served in a scallop shell with mashed potato and a cheese topping. The meal was off to a promising start. When choosing a main-course dish, the roasted medallions of pork immediately caught my attention and proved to be superbly cooked. Juicy and retaining their full flavour, the fillets were wrapped in bacon and covered in a delicious creamy white wine and tarragon sauce. My dining partner opted for the traditional short-crust chicken, leek and bacon pie, which arrived steaming with the aroma of fresh sage and red wine gravy. Both our meals came with plenty of piping-hot seasonal vegetables and gratin potatoes. We enjoyed all this in a relaxing environment, enhanced by soft candlelight. As well as a solid à la carte menu there are always interesting and tempting fresh fish dishes on the specials board and enough cask ales to keep real ale enthusiasts busy - not to mention the extensive wine list and the selection of lagers, spirits, malt whiskies and liqueurs available. This was hearty English food at its best - the Blacksmiths Arms is the kind of place you find yourself enthusiastically recommending to your friends.
