The Plough has a well-deserved reputation both as an events venue and as an exceptional restaurant. Decorated with impeccable taste in warm blue and slate grey, with vibrant modern artworks dotted about, the interior is simultaneously comfortable, elegant and understated. We visited with high expectations and this award-winning spot exceeded them. The menu offers an excellent selection, with something to suit all palates, and the locally sourced produce all comes with a traceable provenance. The restaurant also incorporates a large viewing window so guests can watch the chef and kitchen staff at work.
I chose to start with haddock and tarragon croquettes – succulent bites of white fish encased in a deliciously crisp coating and complemented by pea purée and charred baby gem. My wife opted for smoked salmon and nori terrine with baby beets and salad – a delectable dish, both beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. We were hard-pressed to choose between main courses, especially as we’d heard The Plough’s reputation for exceptional steak and lobster, but we were tempted by other options on this occasion. I selected the perfectly cooked roast duck breast, with a rich confi t duck leg pastilla, and found it pink and succulent. The duck was served with fondant potatoes, celeriac purée and pickled mushrooms, providing an excellent balance of texture and flavour. My companion opted for melt-in-the-mouth pork tenderloin saltimbocca, which was a triumph. The meat was perfectly cooked and the accompaniments of crispy pulled-pork cheek, creamy mash, wilted spinach and cauliflower purée made it a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.
The dessert menu presented an array of tempting options, and we sampled an indulgent passion fruit crème brûlée with almond biscotti and tangy passion fruit jelly, and a Black Forest brownie – a chocoholics dream enhanced with clotted cream and homemade nut cracknel. We finished our evening in the bar area, and as we visited on a Friday which is the regular live music night, were entertained by a live band as we sipped our drinks. Having thoroughly enjoyed our evening, we will certainly be planning a return visit soon.
