If you normally avoid hotel restaurants, you should make an exception for the Watermill. The award-winning restaurant at the Milford Hotel delivers great food in a gracious setting with apparently effortless ease. And it's in a great location too - on the outskirts of Leeds, just off the A1 at junction 42.

From noon till night, every dish that leaves the kitchen has been prepared freshly by an expert team of chefs. With menus that change regularly to include the very best of local produce and reflect the seasons, a meal here is more of a special occasion.

Service is top notch and prices are more than agreeable from £15 for two courses or £19.95 for three - real value for money considering the quality. A warm salad of bacon and mushrooms takes comfort food to new levels and comes topped with a lightly poached egg, while locally smoked salmon is served simply with brown bread and butter.

A simpler lunch menu is served Monday to Saturday, from noon until 2.30pm, costing £10.95 for two courses and £12.95 for three. On Sundays a traditional lunch is available from noon until 9pm at the same price.

Mains deliver pan-fried medallions of venison with a sautéed tranche of melt-in-the-mouth venison liver and red onion and orange marmalade. Swordfish steak is grilled and arrives with crushed new potatoes and a salad dressed with lemon and olive oil.

With a refreshingly chilled watermelon and strawberry soup or tempting cappuccino and dark chocolate mousse to finish, plus an enviable wine list, I can guarantee that you won't have eaten as well as this in a long time.
