There's little that's more important than atmosphere in a restaurant. Well, apart from food, of course. Luckily, Kendell's Bistro has them both covered. Formerly the Cactus Lounge, this Leeds restaurant has reinvented itself as a French bistro and has since gained a number of accolades, including the Leeds Restaurant Awards' 2010 'Best Leeds City Centre Restaurant', winner of TopTable's 2010 dining awards' 'Under £25' and 'Hidden Gems' categories, and the Yorkshire Evening Post's Oliver Awards' 2011 'Best European Restaurant'.

Kendell's is owned by partners Steve and Sharon. Steve skillfully cooks all the dishes in the kitchen, while Sharon expertly runs the front of house, offering each customer the warmest of welcomes. Despite the arty bistro feel, Kendell's is an establishment with little pretence. Huge blackboard menus demonstrate the ever-changing nature of the food (all prepared fresh every day) and everything has a translation. The menu is lovingly hand-picked by Steve, who spent years travelling and learning his craft. The food is decidedly French, of course, with dishes such as supreme de volaille l'estragon (chicken breast, white wine, creme fraiche and tarragon), alongside saumon en croute (salmon with puff pastry). In fact, Kendell's is so French there's no service charge, and bread is free. Desserts are equally tempting, with the likes of a petit pot au chocolat that's liberally bathed in liqueur, and so bad for you it's utterly good.
