Only 2 miles from the centre of Leeds, close to the M1, yet set in a quiet leafy lane in the Headingley conservation area, Haley's appears the perfect place to enjoy classy, imaginative food. Indeed, within its refined walls you'll find worthy cooking, thoughtful service and standards that you could be forgiven for thinking just didn't exist anymore.

Pan seared scallops (£7.25) arrive at the table accompanied by a cauliflower panna cotta and soused vegetable dressing - a charming dish with bags of flair. Starters of warm rabbit roulade (£6.25) or seared foie gras (£7.95) boast similarly sharp handling.

For mains, cod comes grilled and set alongside a potato emulsion, spinach and crayfish butter (£21) - a meltingly good combination. Poached sea bass (£19.45) dances to the sprightly notes of tomato and saffron broth, vanilla, fennel and new potatoes.

Yorkshire rhubarb (£5.25) is celebrated in fine style with a trio of taste sensations: rhubarb jelly with mascarpone, rhubarb panna cotta with ginger biscotti and oat crumble tart with clotted cream - the diet, as the saying goes, starts tomorrow.

That much-loved culinary classic, the chocolate fondant (£5.25), also makes good use of generous amounts of clotted cream - a rich, dreamy concoction that delivers on all fronts. You've never had it so good.
