Frédéric is a small but perfectly formed café and bistro serving French peasant food in the heart of Maidstone. Chef patron Ulric Allsebrook grew up in the Dordogne region of France, so you can expect his food to be simple, fresh, hearty and tasty. You'll be able to see him hard at work in the open kitchen, making every dish from scratch using the best fresh ingredients. Frédéric is a friendly, family-run establishment; Ulric's wife Sarah bakes the delicious cakes and puddings, and the café was named after their youngest son. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, and the service is unfussy.

Visit for lunch and enjoy a light yet satisfying dish such as smoked salmon tartine or fresh fi g, goat's cheese and Kent cobnut salad. Those visiting in the evening might choose to start with grilled goat's cheese, paté, rillettes, saucisson or pan-fried foie gras. Follow with duck breast, sea bass or guinea fowl, or a more traditional dish such as beef Bourguignon or fillet steak. The puddings offer interesting new takes on French classics. Perhaps treat yourself to the prune and Armagnac tart, apple tarte Normande, or lemon and lavender roulade. Accompany your meal with a French wine from the comprehensive list, which includes varieties from Pouilly-Fuissé, Gigondas, St Joseph and Chateauneuf-du-Pape, all available by the glass or bottle
