A drive through the Kent countryside is a delightful experience in itself, but if you happen to stumble across The Horseshoes at East Farleigh, your day out is guaranteed to be a resounding success. Greeted by smart, friendly staff, we were shown through the stylish restaurant to a cosy corner where families and couples were dining by candlelight beside a log fire. Presented with an extensive menu, also featuring tapas-style sharers, my companion chose succulent lamb's kidney with mushrooms and mustard sauce on toasted ciabatta. Every forkful of my deepfried Somerset Brie with apricot compote and watercress was truly sublime, and complemented perfectly by a fruity Shiraz.

Marinated in honey and black pepper, a main course of pan-fried Barbary duck was perfectly cooked and served with curly kale in a flavoursome plum and beetroot sauce. The stunningly presented black olive and onion tart with cumin-roasted vegetables, crisp onion rings and a smoked tomato dressing was also a real treat, demonstrating imagination and skill. Just managing to find room for dessert, I soon found myself wolfing down the lemon meringue pie with berry coulis - plans were already afoot to make a return visit. With a menu just for little ones to enjoy, The Horseshoes welcomes the whole family - you and your kin might even be lucky enough to arrive for a fish supper or just in time for a live jazz session.
