Waggon at Hale
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
179 Capstone Road, Chatham, ME5 7PP
The Waggon at Hale is just the sort of traditional, family-run country pub that people love to return to time and again. Both travellers and locals are drawn to the charming exterior and warmly welcomed in by Emma and her friendly team. But it's the food that really keeps them hooked. Both the bar and restaurant menu are jam-packed with a huge variety of home-cooked food. A glass of crisp white for me and pint of real ale for him, we pondered over our evening meal. What to start with? Smoked duck salad with a raspberry dressing, Thai fishcake, or perhaps the soup? All sounded delicious. When it comes to mains I would certainly recommend the Waggon's homemade fisherman's pie - think succulent chunks of salmon, smoked haddock, cod and prawns in a creamy cheese, chilli and lemon sauce and a satisfyingly crispy filo top. Meat eaters will be licking their lips at the sight of game pudding, hunter's chicken, 8oz rump steak and Waggon burger. With plenty of snug corners to cosy up in, the Waggon is great for a little romantic tête-à-tête - in which case opt for one of the sharing platters. The Waggon combo will see you both digging into vegetable samosas, spring rolls, onion rings, chicken strips, potato wedges, garlic bread and a selection of dips. This is also a great family destination - the kids will be enamoured with Crackling the micro pig, Onions the dog and Colonel the rooster. With a great Sunday roast and events throughout the year, there really is every reason to visit the Waggon at Hale.
