In the Unden family since 1951 (run today by Peter Unden and his partner Andrea Cotterell), the Seven Sisters retains many of its original Art Deco features, including stained glass, oak panelling and oak chairs. But it's their specials board that holds the real attraction. Buying fresh ingredients every day, Peter furnishes the board with good old-fashioned dishes, using deliciously fresh vegetables sourced from the local Seaford greengrocer, fish from Newhaven and meat from the local butcher.

Once we were settled in with a refreshing tipple, we chose our dishes. My companion opted for the steak and ale pie with seasonal vegetables and baby new potatoes, while I plumped for a dish of perfectly cooked pork loin chops. The chops were melt-in-the-mouth delicious and my companion couldn't get over the size of her portion - the light, sumptuous shortcrust pastry was packed to the gunwales with tender meat.

The Seven Sisters is a family-friendly pub with an attractive, child-safe enclosed garden and large play area. Real ales include Harveys, Bombardier and Shepherd Neame's Spitfire, and there is an excellent wine list featuring a global spread and starting at just £11.95 a bottle. The pub has ample car parking and can accommodate coach parties by arrangement - this is a place not to be missed.
