This attractive, traditional pub run by Linda and Mike is one to add to the not-to-be-missed list for lovers of great food. Horns Lodge is popular with walkers, as it adjoins Chailey Common in the heart of the picturesque South Downs. Diners can be assured that even the dishes on the traditional pub grub menu (expect to pay under £10 each) are prepared from scratch. But it gets even better for diners looking for something a little more gastronomically exciting, as the specials board is positively groaning with sumptuous dishes, all locally sourced where possible.

My companion and I were welcomed by Linda, immediately presented with the wine list and given delicious homemade bread to be getting on with while we made our selections. For my friend, it was duck paté followed by rib-eye steak, cooked to order in a Jack Daniel's and Stilton sauce, accompanied by game chips and seasonal vegetables. She said she didn't really need to use the steak knife, as it was perfectly cooked and wonderfully tender. I couldn't resist the broccoli and Stilton soup, which was delightful, and followed it with faultlessly cooked monkfish tail with crayfish and mushrooms, served in a creamy parsley sauce. After a short break we delved into a pear frangipane tart and strawberry Bakewell tart; the two clean plates were evidence of our complete satisfaction.
