Esplanade, Ventnor, Isle of Wight, PO38 1JX
One of the oldest buildings on the Esplanade, dating back to 1830, this former smugglers' favourite is great for those wishing to gaze across the English Channel while nibbling on freshly caught lobster and supping a pint on the waterside terrace. No doubt this family-run business has benefited greatly from its impressive location, but its abundant character, great service and fantastic seafood have also played a big part in building its enviable reputation.

Owners Neil and Steph Gibbs have made The Spyglass a nautical haven with their collection of maritime memorabilia, and often host live music nights including classical guitar, folk and jazz. Dishes showcase produce from Island fisherman and farmers and the specials board regularly features local shellfish and meat. For those hungry enough, the seafood platter, comprising fish salad, prawns, crabmeat, smoked mackerel, pickled herring, green-lipped mussels and bread and butter, is a lip-smacking choice. The tuna steak with garlic butter and the cold gammon are both tasty options too. Accompany a ploughman's lunch with one of a range of ales such as Hobgoblin, Ringwood and Bitburger Pils - brewed in accordance with ancient German purity regulations and made with the water of the Eifel mountains - and you'll be in for a treat. With en-suite apartments overlooking Ventnor Bay, The Spyglass is a superb place to stay while you're visiting.
