The Marine offers traditional pub grub and light bites at incredible value, whether you're visiting for a special-occasion meal or have happened upon this conveniently placed venue and dropped in for a pit-stop.

Our nachos to start arrived sprinkled with warm melted cheese and chunky-cut jalapenos, with huge dollops of rich and piquant salsa, sour cream and gorgeous guacamole. The £5.75 platter could feed four, even without the optional chilli - available for a reasonable £1.50 extra. The recommended slider burgers were our next stop; featuring three 3oz morsels served with chunky chips that were fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside. The teriyaki chicken slider had a beautiful blend of sweetness and spiciness, while the vegetarian mixed bean slider was incredibly aromatic with generous helpings of mint and thyme. The star of my trio was the slow-cooked barbecue pork with a sticky, sweet and tangy sauce. And because the cost was just £8.50, I'll soon be returning to sample the other four flavours.

The Marine also does justice to classic beer-battered cod, chips and peas, and winter-warmer wild boar and apple sausages, served with creamy mash, peas and onion gravy. The Marine is also incredible value; the fish for example is just £6.95, or two can dine for £10.99. The homemade crumble, made fresh to order and served with cream or custard was amazing - its buttery crunchy topping complementing the delicate flavour of the pears
