In the centre of the Island, just three miles south of Newport, the rural village of Rookley is home to The Chequers Inn. This 18th-Century former customs house is now a CAMRA-recommended establishment due to its fine selection of premier ales and boasts a great reputation for thoroughly traditional cuisine, utilising local produce. While salads, jacket potatoes and sandwiches are certainly not to be overlooked, the three-course dining experience is something else entirely. As well as keeping their own Aberdeen Angus herd - the 16oz T-bone steak is simply delicious - Richard and Sue also rear lamb on the surrounding land. Other notable dishes include oven-baked trout, the mighty Chequers burger and the rather luxurious Isle of Wight pork chop. The chefs are extremely accommodating and will cater for any dietary requirements.

The Chequers Inn has many a string to its bow, organising walks around the local area and offering an independent bar for functions. What's more, if making your way home seems far too much of a Herculean task after your evening feast, why not stay the night in one of the luxury en-suite rooms, complete with free Wi-Fi and breakfast service? With a good amount of parking available, a large garden and children's play area, it's ideal for families. As far as free houses go on the Isle of Wight, this one is up there with the best of them.
