The Consort Restaurant
Albert Cottage Hotel, York Avenue, East Cowes, Isle of Wight, PO32 6BD
Formerly a part of Queen Victoria's Osborne Estate, Albert Cottage Hotel can be found in a beautifully kept grade-II-listed building, tucked away in the historic town of East Cowes. These days the jewel in this building's crown is its exceptional dining facility - The Consort Restaurant. At The Consort guests are invited to dine on some fine modern European cuisine, while admiring the splendid and historic surroundings. Eating at The Consort doesn't have to be hard on the pocket either, and guests can enjoy a three-course evening meal for the princely sum of £24, while the restaurant's Sunday roast costs just £17.95. Other speciality feasts can be enjoyed at Easter, on Valentine's Day and, of course, over Christmas. Check the hotel's comprehensive website to keep abreast of all that is going on, especially as the menus change weekly depending on the time of year - alternatively, the management encourages prospective visitors to call the hotel to find out about upcoming events and menus. There are many ways to begin your dining experience at The Consort. One could be to sit back and lap up the restaurant's lovely atmosphere with a glass of wine in hand, but for those who simply cannot wait to try the food, the appetisers section of the menu is a fabulous starting point. Here you can enter seventh heaven with the creamy garlic mushrooms served on a herb bruschetta, or sink your teeth into the delicately pan-fried chicken livers. All of the main dishes on offer take advantage of local produce, and this really shows when you tuck into the roast chicken breast with a black pudding mousse centre - succulent, delicious and covered in a creamy white wine sauce. Another delicious main is the venison and ale pie with shortcrust pastry. Topped with mashed potato and oozing with flavour, this delicate treat comes apart with the lightest touch of the knife, highlighting just how perfectly it has been cooked by the kitchen team. Vegetarians can also take great pleasure in the roasted red pepper, which arrives on the plate filled with spiced cous cous and melted blue cheese - a treat that even meat-eaters will agree is somewhat moreish. A great finale to your meal is The Consort cheeseboard, which is chock-a-block with the nation's favourite cheeses and an assortment of biscuits. Other desserts that are just too good to share include the chocolate cheesecake, warm treacle sponge and Albert Cottage trifle. Dessert wines are also available should you require a tipple to accompany your finale. As well as constantly changing on a daily basis, all cuisine at The Consort is made with produce that is local to the Island where possible. Along with all of the lovingly crafted food served at The Consort, the hotel itself is also an ideal venue for weddings, celebrations, meetings and conferences. Whether visiting on business or for pleasure, all guests are assured a warm welcome and an accommodating stay.
