Originally built in 1771, the Golden Fleece (as it was known back then) has played host to a number of dignitaries. An early visitor was former United States president Thomas Jefferson, who chose this as a place to stay during a state visit in 1789. King Charles X of France is another notable guest, who stopped by with his family in 1830. Still living up to its regal reputation, this historic establishment continues to serve visitors to the Island, and is now known as The Fountain Inn.

With 20 comfortable en-suite rooms available - including some with sea views - The Fountain is a great venue in which to enjoy a luxurious weekend away. To make the most of your stay you simply must sample something from the pub's menu. The chef's selection is particularly brilliant; the farm-assured smothered chicken breast is fantastically moreish, arriving on the plate with grilled bacon, goat's cheese and watercress, topped with tomato Provençal sauce and served with chips and salad garnish. Or why not instead opt for one of the kitchen's gourmet burgers? A notable treat from this section of the menu is the surf and turf, which is the ultimate indulgence with tailon tempura-battered king prawns resting on top of a British beef burger, complete with Cheddar, grilled bacon, salad and mayonnaise. This dish comes served with chips and a spicy tomato relish. Diners can also choose from a variety of steaks, some traditional classics, salads and a host of decadent desserts.

Do not miss out on the Island yacht race which takes place every year, as well as the Isle of Wight regatta - both of which can be unobtrusively viewed from The Fountain's very own outside decked area. These events give you the perfect opportunity to take advantage of The Fountain's ideal location, further proving that this place really is the perfect haven in which to relax, explore and enjoy some lovely home-cooked food. Island hospitality simply doesn't get much better than this.
