Old Rectory Lane, Church Place, Pulborough, West Sussex, RH20 1AD
Situated in the historic village of Pulborough in the South Downs, the Chequers Hotel boasts stunning views across the River Arun Valley and dates back to the late 1500s. Proprietors Andy and Sue Purkis have been running the nine-bedroom hotel since 2008 and in that time have built a deservedly shining reputation for their restaurant.

The dining room itself is lovely, with natural light streaming in from the adjoining gardens and an emphasis on modern presentation and good service. The carefully chosen wine list offers some well-priced selections, perfectly suited to the different dishes available. A real standout component of the menu is the black rock grill: a volcanic granite stone preheated to 440 degrees and placed onto a specially designed grill platter so that your selected meat can be cooked at the table in front of you. Without the use of any extra oils or fats, it is a healthier cooking method and a rare, medium or well-done outcome is totally within your own control. The choice of quality cuts is extensive, ranging from rump, sirloin and fillet beef to duck, lamb, venison, ostrich and kangaroo. Each platter comes with a fresh salad and choice of jacket potato, wedges or chips. There's also a wide selection of herb rubs and side dips to bring out the best of the flavours, including a wonderful Tennessee glaze with Jack Daniel's, which added a terrifically spicy kick to a top-quality cut. The other options on the à la carte selection cover a choice of locally sourced produce, with chicken breast in lemon and cream reduction a particular highlight.

The generosity of the servings should not dissuade you from leaving room for dessert - the traditional sticky toffee pudding with custard is a delicate delight that characterises the finesse of the food that comes out of Andy's kitchen.
