Only a short drive from the buzz of Brighton and the sweeping South Downs, The White Hart is conveniently situated just off the high street in historic Henfield. Dating back to the 17th Century, the establishment boasts all the classic features of an old English pub: exposed oak beams, a large open fireplace and squashy Chesterfield sofas you can sink comfortably into with a pint of fine Badger ale.

Landlord Gyles Culver and his wife Mo offer a varied menu of traditional English pub fare as well as lighter Mediterranean bites. The emphasis here is on sourcing high-quality, fresh produce from local suppliers - there is even a sign on the bar informing diners which local farms are supplying the week's meats.

On our visit, I opted for a starter of chicken liver and green peppercorn paté with toasted walnut bread, followed by the Spanish plate - a delectable assortment of tapas-style nibbles. My fellow diner chose the crispy shredded aromatic duck salad to start and the homemade flame-grilled burger to follow and was not disappointed. The generous portion sizes meant we were too full to squeeze in a dessert each, but there was no way we were going to miss out on the raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake, so we settled for one slice and two spoons. Mo's own salad dressing recipe - Mojooss - is an award-winner and has proved such a hit with visitors that it's available to buy from the pub and several local outlets. We left with two bottles to enjoy at home.

Open every day for lunch and dinner (including a fabulous roast on Sundays), and with two or three-course set menus during the week, The White Hart offers a good selection of dishes at very reasonable prices. The fact that the pub consistently tops the polls in The Good Pub Guide is testament to its solid reputation as a leading venue for great food and drink - I, for one, will definitely be making a return visit.
