The Black Jug
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
This classic old-town venue has been sympathetically updated to retain its charm, yet also offers everything a modern pub should, with a bookcase and a roaring fire in the old building and a leafy conservatory extension at the back. The warm welcome helps create a traditional feel, and the hum of conversation forms the soundtrack to appreciative eating and drinking.
The pub is part of the Brunning and Price family, which is an assurance to those who know the quality associated with its name. The menu changes seasonally and ranges from great versions of pub classics like deep-fried cod in Harvey’s beer batter, served with chips, peas, and bread, to more adventurous choices such as air-dried ham-wrapped fillet of hake, with tarragon mash, braised fennel, and bisque. However much you enjoy your main, be sure to leave room for pudding, as both the traditional and the more inventive desserts – such as my Sussex Tom Cat gin and tonic jelly with orange, raspberry and mint salad, and sorbet – taste as good as they look. All the dishes come presented to a standard that you would expect to find in an exclusive restaurant setting, along with extremely attentive service to match, making a meal at The Black Jug a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
