Sprigs Holly, Chinnor, OX39 4BX
The romantic and seductive Sir Charles Napier can be found in the middle of nowhere on top of the Chiltern Hills, where red kites soar and beech woods are all around. Well-deserved accolades include a Michelin star and three AA rosettes. Julie Griffiths has been running The Napier for almost 50 years with the help of her daughter Caroline, various grandchildren and her sculptor husband, Michael Cooper, whose wonderful work is exhibited throughout the year.

Lunch is served on the terrace in the summer months, shaded by vines and wisteria and overlooking the extensive lawns, herbaceous borders and herb gardens. In the winter there are huge log fires, local game, fungi forays and cookery demonstrations which make this a place to visit come rain or shine. Guests might like a seat by the window where the beautiful sculptures in the garden can be seen.

There are various carefully thought-out menus to choose from, including the à la carte, set menu and tasting menu. Head chef Anthony Skeat's cooking celebrates the cycles of the year and is informed by seasonal local produce, with foraged wild garlic and nettles as well as woodland mushrooms playing their respective parts in spring and autumn. All of this is a winning formula that makes the beautiful, unforgettable Sir Charles Napier a desirable dining destination
