The sight of The Queens Head, with its attractive exterior, original 17th-century features and pretty garden, is a most inviting prospect. Inside, guests are welcomed into a space filled with exposed brick walls and low-beamed ceilings - it's just about as cosy and as olde-worlde as they come.

But it's not all about the ambience here. You'll be pleased to hear that they have a great selection of drinks, too - perhaps you'll sample a pint of well-kept real ale or a glass of something from the concise wine list. The food is also excellent and the team in the kitchen takes great pride in serving up delicious British cuisine executed with flair. You might start with homemade fishcakes in crispy breadcrumbs with baby leaf salad and citrus mayonnaise or the black pudding tower with pancetta in an English mustard sauce. When it comes to mains, old favourites vie for your attention alongside delights such as chargrilled swordfish steak marinated in lemon and oregano and served with a tomato, olive, caper and chilli sauce. The pork belly is practically famous around here - it's cooked for nine hours in Aspall cider and tastes incredible.

The Queens Head's location in the very heart of Dogmersfield means that this is a great pit-stop for anyone walking the Basingstoke cana
