The impressive facade of The Wellington Arms is reminiscent of a stately home from a bygone age - and no wonder, as it resides on an estate owned by The Duke of Wellington.

The grand surroundings are simply picture perfect, making it a rather fine wedding venue. But we were here to sample the delicious-sounding menu, brimming with dishes ranging from the traditional to the less familiar. We awaited our first course with great anticipation, and the heavily laden traditional pantry plate met our expectations - the pork and herb Scotch egg, kedgeree arancini and Somerset Cheddar croquettes were especially good. Onto the mains, my roasted cod marinated in red wine, garlic and shallots was a mouth-watering dish, the tender flesh falling away beautifully from the crispy skin at the touch of a fork. My wife went for the half lobster, purchased fresh from the fishmongers, with piping-hot garlic butter, gem lettuce, micro cress salad and fries. She assures me that it was a triumph. Our divine desserts rounded off a pleasurable feast. The decadent chocolate brownie was beautifully offset by the sharpness of fresh raspberries, and the Earl Grey creme brulée - which was flamed at the table - was quite the showstopper.

The menu changes with the seasons, and we can't wait to return to sample something new. This is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal with friends
