As I pored over the menu at the Grapevine Bistro, I was genuinely excited by the foodie delights to come. The variety of innovative dishes offered here, made using locally sourced ingredients, reveals why this restaurant in picturesque Odiham has been listed in the Michelin Guide. We enjoyed stunning starters conjured up by chef Pawel - velvety smooth watercress and mussel soup with freshly made rosemary and shallot bread, and gorgeous goat's cheese mousse, encased in an exquisitely crafted Parmesan basket with dill purée and white truffle oil. Head chef Kamil then produced perfectly presented main courses - a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. The 28-day-hung sirloin steak with oxtail potato boulangere and wild mushroom fricassee was tender and juicy, whilst my flaky hake with tomato and coriander fricassee, parmentier potatoes, capers and green olive vinaigrette, was absolutely divine. From the delightfully decadent dessert selection we chose indulgent white chocolate cheesecake with vanilla milkshake, and the Malibu and coconut creme brûlée, both of which brimmed with intense richness.

Grapevine Bistro is relaxed and informal, with wooden floors and a terracotta and saffron interior. Opening at 10am for coffee and cake, they also offer special early-evening deals with two courses for £13.95 or three for £16.95. I have dined in many excellent restaurants in my time, but this gem on the edge of the Downs sits with the best of them. The decor and ambience may be understated, but the food is a shining star.
