Resting on the banks of the River Wey, this superb gastropub is in total harmony with its pretty surroundings. A decked terrace overlooks the water, allowing ample opportunity for watching the passing boats, cyclists and walkers who take advantage of this haven tucked a stone's throw away from the centre of Guildford. Built in the early 1900s, The Weyside has been designed to be sympathetic to - and make the most of - the building's original features. Mismatched fabrics, cushions, throws, patchwork rugs, lots of wood, baskets and chic vintage touches make up the unique look, which is at once interesting, rustic, welcoming and comfortable.

The menu of contemporary and classic gastropub fare includes a sharing platter of mixed British cured meats, including the Weyside Scotch egg, a handmade pork pie and pickles. Authentic pub food includes Young's Bitter-battered haddock with rustic chips, crushed minted peas and tartare sauce; and dishes like braised Dorset lamb shoulder, creamy mash, red cabbage and apricot jam offer the opportunity to sample the skill set of the kitchen team. The lunchtime sandwich selection includes roasted Mediterranean vegetable, goat's cheese and pesto ciabatta, while on Sundays a selection from the main menu is served alongside some mouth-watering roasts - the Dingley Dell pork loin with stuffing and all the trimmings is my favourite.

With Young's ales at the bar, a selection of cider and plenty of excellent wines, The Weyside is also a great spot for a casual drink. The whole family is welcome, with board games and toys to keep the children amused and a dogs' corner for feeding and drying off soggy pups after a walk
