This historic pub dates back to 1805 and can be found at White Hart Corner, opposite the village green in Pirbright. This village is a great place for walkers - and its local provides the perfect place to refuel and relax. Getting the balance right between modern and traditional isn't easy, but has been achieved successfully at The White Hart. The pub retains many original features alongside several contemporary areas, giving it a modern feel with a rustic twist.

All the food is freshly prepared to a very high standard, being at once traditional, elegant and uncomplicated with a modern slant. We started with a house tasting platter - a medley of duck and chicken paté with chutney and toasted brioche, chef's homemade soup, deep-fried Somerset Brie, fig and prosciutto, lemongrass tempura prawns and pork belly with black pudding - which was excellent. For mains, we chose a surf and turf of grilled sirloin steak and sautéed chilli king prawns, and beer-battered haddock with chunky chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce.

The desserts looked fabulous; the treacle tart with lemon curd was a particular highlight. In addition to the main bill of fare, there's a children's selection, a range of specials, a set-price supper menu and a delicious roast platter available every Sunday. The pub's wine list is impressive and extremely well priced. They also serve real ales, local brews and guest ales. The White Hart offers a warm, friendly and bustling atmosphere, and great dining at credit-crunch prices - I can't recommend it enough
