What could be more delightful than a drive into the Kent countryside and the discovery of a traditional inn, complete with oak beams, an open fire and plenty of character? Well, all of the above, plus the addition of delicious home-cooked food. The Rose & Crown offers this and much more. Food is sourced locally and portions are generous. We sampled starters of perfectly cooked salt and pepper squid and flat mushrooms with herbs, which paved the way for tender beef and ale pie and the best steak and kidney pie I have had the pleasure to eat. Like everything else, the crispy, light onion rings were homemade and utterly moreish. For dessert, my husband opted for apple and blackcurrant crumble with custard while I chose the Kentish speciality, a heavenly Gypsy Tart topped with ice cream. After a leisurely coffee we agreed we would be coming back to this walkers favourite which, incidentally, allows dogs in the bar area.
