Following last year’s refurbishment, The Seahorse in Gosport draws in scores of the region’s foodies. The restaurant sports a light and bright coastal-themed interior and an enticing new menu to match. Wine choices are a well-curated selection of European and New World reds and whites. With plenty of friendly members of staff on-hand, there was no waiting around, even on a busy Thursday evening.

I started with marinated tiger prawns from the à la carte. Judging by the dishes emerging from the kitchen, I’d have been equally content with the crab and crayfish tortellini, the tapas board or a dish from the list of specials. I moved on to duck breast with fondant potatoes accompanied by a full-bodied French house red wine, followed by a vanilla panna cotta Eton Mess, paired with a delicious Italian coffee. The menu also boasts the likes of steak, homemade burgers and whole fish specials – the amount of quality seafood reflects the new owners Abby and David Thomson’s love of the sea, which is just a stone’s throw away. The menu is set to be revised every three months to follow the seasons and make use of Hampshire’s best produce. The Seahorse bar is also open for food service and welcomes dogs, providing the perfect stop-off after a stroll along the beach or through the nearby Alver Valley Country Park.
