The Crofton is the kind of homely, traditional pub that you wish was at the end of your road. For a lucky few it makes a fantastic local, and for others its unpretentious atmosphere and fantastic food is certainly worth making the trip to Fareham.

There are oodles of home-cooked favourites to be found here, on an enticing menu and extensive specials board. The prices are incredibly reasonable and, when we visited mid week, the place was busy with diners. We tried deep-fried camembert and the smoked salmon and crayfish salad for starters. This was followed by a magnificent steak, plus an amazing homemade chilli pie - a medley of minced beef with a cheesy nacho topping, and the best chilli I've ever tasted. Managing to find room for one of the tempting desserts, we shared the homemade bread-and-butter pudding. The dish brought back childhood memories, but the divine taste was leagues ahead of the puds of my school days.

One tribute to The Crofton's success is the recipe book of home-cooked classics they offer, with all proceeds going to a local charity. You can recapture some of their signature mouth-watering dishes at home if you're feeling adventurous. But if trying them first hand in lovely surroundings takes your fancy, meander off the beaten track and seek out this lovely pub.
