Hosts Chia and Stewart have successfully pulled off a rare combination at Ye Olde Whyte Harte. Centuries-old exposed beams, an open fire, fantastic real ales and a weekly quiz make the pub a hub for villagers in the lovely waterside setting of Hamble-le-Rice, whilst skilful cooking, wonderful local ingredients and hearty portions mean that it's also well worth travelling to for some first-class dining.

We were presented with plenty of choice thanks to the extensive bar menu, deli boards, a large selection of daily specials and a range of snacks and sandwiches, but we eventually settled on the crab and spring onion tartlets and a serving of the pea and ham soup to start. The tartlets delicately balanced the competing crab and onion flavours, and a light serving of lemon creme fraiche added a refreshing note. For my main course, I trusted the menu's description of chef's 'yummy' chicken kiev, its crisp, herby crust giving way to tender chicken oozing freshly made garlic butter. My partner very much enjoyed the Whiteparish pork faggots, which were smooth yet meaty.

Portions throughout the meal were very generous, so we opted to share our dessert of lemon and lime pudding. The citrus and cream combination in this light, fluffy and moist sponge cake was extremely satisfying. If you want great food, but still like a traditional village pub, then head for Ye Olde Whyte Harte
