Upon entering The Bell Hotel, one is immediately swathed in Edwardian elegance. The reception lounge leads through to an intimate yet stylish bar area, where funky tweeds, grained wood surfaces and a modern wood-burning fire create a sleek pre-dinner retreat.

Once ensconced in the dining room of calming grey, you can explore the menu. The à la carte offers, as you would expect, beautifully presented dishes with interesting twists. Menu options tantalise then deliver. The pumpkin and Ashmore cheese tartlet was crisp and flavoursome, with the added flourish of black cabbage cream swirled beneath. The coriander, lime and green chilli pesto, which accompanied pan-roasted sardine fillets with cauliflower purée, was tangy without overpowering the flavour of the fish. Main-course classics, such as seared rump of lamb and pan-roasted duck, were partnered by imaginative vegetable creations. The potato, onion and tomato cake was a particular triumph. Happily, the dessert menu offered both the delicate - pear and Cognac bavarois with white chocolate sauce and marinated pear - and the decadent, in the shape of a perfectly rich chocolate tart with strawberry ice cream. Service throughout the entire meal was outstanding.

By the time you leave The Bell Hotel all your gastronomic senses will have been indulged. You'll be back very soon
