The Five Bells
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
The Five Bells is a traditional English pub ensconced in the heart of Eastry, a grand example of 17th century architecture. Having undergone a sympathetic refurbishment, the pub is a wonderful place to while away an afternoon beside an open fire. Downstairs, you’ll find the pub’s two separate bars: one sees darts, pool and live entertainment regularly taking place, while the other offers a quiet space for conversation and enjoying excellent home-cooked fare. Dishes are made using fresh ingredients sourced from the locale, when possible. Quick light bites are available, from sandwiches to fluffy jacket potatoes with a range of hot fillings. From the main menu, starters such as the prawn cocktail or the homemade soup served with French bread go down a treat. For mains, the rack of ribs is certainly worth a try, ample in size and served with a side of chunky chips. If you’ve a hearty appetite, plump for the giant Yorkshire pudding filled with tender beef casserole and served alongside creamy mash and vegetables.
In addition to the lengthy à la carte menu, there are also regularly changing specials, meaning frequent visitors will always have something new to try. This pub also offers accommodation, so you can stay the night in one of three comfortable bedrooms. When the weather behaves, head to the beer garden, which also boasts a children’s play area. The outside space is regularly used by the pub’s petanque team in the summer, as well as for holding barbecues and an annual beer festival at Easter.
