This charming country restaurant has been in the capable hands of Carol and Paul Bloomfield for the past five years, and certainly lives up to its reputation for traditional home-cooked food, served in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Horse brasses decorate an enormous open fireplace, and prints by local artist Dick Sturgeon adorn the walls. Paul was on hand behind the bar to greet us and serve drinks as we explored the extensive menu in eager anticipation. The choice here is varied and competitively priced, with a set menu and chef's specials offering something to suit every taste. There's a good selection of house wines by the glass or, for those enjoying a livelier meal, a list of over 30 inexpensive wines available by the bottle. To start, my wife and I opted for the classics - traditional prawn cocktail and deep-fried mushrooms with garlic dip (both £4.25). Both were delicious and accompanied by fresh and warm crusty bread. For my main course I chose pork medallions with Stilton sauce and a selection of fresh vegetables (£8.95), while my wife opted for the 'Friday night fish special', which saw fresh breaded haddock with peas and chips (£5.99) - both dishes beautifully cooked by Carol. The meal ended on a sweet note - I couldn't resist the raspberry cheesecake with clotted cream, whereas my wife indulged herself with homemade white chocolate and Malteaser ice cream, made locally by Lovington's of Somerset. We were served throughout by Ryanne, who pandered to our every whim. The Golden Fleece deserves to succeed. From the moment we walked in we found the atmosphere welcoming, the food cooked perfectly, with very generous portions, and friendly, efficient service. Not content to rest on their laurels, Carol and Paul have just opened five letting rooms, offering a bed and full English breakfast at £75 per night, and within the grounds they also run a certified camping and caravan site, ideal for those who want to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside at their leisure.
