It is always nice, when stepping over the threshold of your evening's dining destination, to immediately be warmly welcomed and swiftly shown to a table. This was our experience at The British Raj. The restaurant had a calming, contemporary interior with appropriately mellow music playing in the background. We enjoyed poppadoms and a selection of chutneys whilst choosing from what proved a very extensive menu. To start, I opted for prawn puri and was delighted with the delicious leavened bread stuffed with a spicy prawn filling that was set before me. My husband chose classic vegetable samosas, which here were light and full of flavour. The aromas from our selected mains arrived before they did, piquing our appetite for beautifully presented, tender dishes of lamb bhuna, creamy chicken passanda and aloo dom, accompanied by a delicate lemon rice and a tasty, piping-hot peshwari naan, which was utterly indulgent and generously covered in coconut. In fact, everything we tried was melt-in-the-mouth delicious and the best Indian food we have enjoyed in the area. I finished with a dessert of pistachio kulfi ice cream while my husband opted for the Mango Delight sorbet. After lingering over coffee we decided that The British Raj was now on our list of favourite local restaurants and we would soon be availing ourselves of their popular takeaway service
