Oozing character and classic British charm, Brewery Shades has stood proudly on Crawley’s High Street since the 15th century, when it was used as a gaol. With tales of hangings, ghosts and a haunted function room, Brewery Shades’ reputation precedes itself.

Despite its gruesome history, the timber-framed Grade II listed building is quite spectacular and is a real hit with tourists and locals alike. It boasts wooden beams, plenty of cosy nooks, two open fires and a spacious outside seating area, perfect for sunny afternoons.

Featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for many years, the knowledgeable team prides itself on serving a great pint. It also boasts an impressive 35 gins. Equally tempting is the fantastic selection of lager, craft beer, wine, spirits and cocktails found at the bar. With its cosy leather sofas, the spacious bar area encourages guests to relax and have a good old-fashioned catch up. In the winter, you might sip a warming mulled wine or cider.

The food at Brewery Shades is terribly good; it would be a crime not to while away some time here sampling the highlights of the extensive menu. While you peruse the menu, perhaps settle down with one of the ten real ales or eight traditional ciders for which the pub is renowned. Featuring all of your pub favourites, the menu at Brewery Shades is simple, but offers something for every palate. You’ll find that you’re spoilt for choice, but rest assured that you’ll be satisfied whatever you decide upon. Fresh, locally sourced treasures include local sausages, steaks, burgers, fish and chips and fantastic sandwiches. A clear favourite is the Macho Roast Trilogy sandwich, which comprises thick slices of home-cooked British beef, pork loin, chicken and rustic stuffing, served on brown or white farmhouse bread with roast potatoes and gravy for dipping. This sandwich alone is worth visiting for.

Vegetarian dishes include a hearty mushroom Stroganoff and flavoursome Quorn sausages with mash, peas and veggie onion gravy. A children’s menu ensures that your little ones leave with smiles on their faces too. You’ll also find Brewery Shades on Deliveroo, so you can have top-notch restaurant-quality food delivered to your door.
