A red-brick former coaching inn on the outside, contemporary dining space on the inside, The Crown is a perfectly pitched pub set in the historic village of Chalfont St Giles. Owners Guy and Ally Bradley have achieved in just two years what some restaurateurs can only dream of - a stylish yet unpretentious foodie haven where the cooking, confidently and deservedly, takes centre stage.

Regular trips to London's Billingsgate fish market and Smithfield's meat markets mean super-fresh ingredients are the order of the day - all put to excellent use by head chef Alexander Zinke. Having trained under H'l'ne Darroze at The Connaught in Mayfair, London, and worked at restaurants throughout Europe, Zinke is as capable of serving up classic comfort food - like honey-glazed pork belly with potato gratin - as he is experimenting with bold flavour combinations, such as seared scallops with spiced peaches. Staff clearly share his passion for good food; the kitchen regularly takes on apprentices and the front- of-house team are knowledgeable, always on hand to help with any tricky decisions.

To start, brown crab with pickled samphire delights with its combination of textures. For the main course, a thick fillet of salmon, perched atop a creamy potato risotto, is succulent and sweet, while fennel and a red wine reduction add a parting zesty kick. Indulgent desserts, from a playful chocolate mountain with popping candy to a cheeseboard and pudding wines, provide the perfect final touches to an enticing restaurant menu. The £11 two-course lunch option (served Monday to Saturday from noon until 3pm) offers excellent value for money, featuring dishes from the à la carte selection. Alternatively, the adjoining bar area serves generous portions of traditional favourites, such as fish and chips and delicious roasts.

With its boutique decor, featuring chunky wooden furniture, a palette of muted greens and creams, paisley wallpaper and arty lampshades, The Crown is light and airy by day and intimately lit in the evening, while the secluded courtyard is the perfect place to dine alfresco.
