Situated on Selsey Road in Sidlesham, just four miles outside Chichester, The Anchor Inn is an easily accessible location for both locals and those enjoying a stay in West Sussex. This cosy, traditional pub has ample dining space, convivial surroundings, and a friendly and attentive team that made us feel really welcome. George, the landlord, took over the pub in 2016 and has since placed emphasis on good-value, homemade pub food, sourced locally wherever possible. The menu concentrates on traditional pub favourites such as cottage pie and Sussex sausages, but also offers more modern classics such as nachos and Cajun chicken. There’s a specials board that changes regularly, and a good range of reasonably priced wine. The pub has also introduced themed weeks of specials with an international flavour, such as Mexican, and The Anchor’s Sunday carvery has already become an established favourite with locals and visitors to the area.

We started our meal with good oldfashioned prawn cocktail and more contemporary mushroom crostini. Both were delicious and came in plentiful portions. For my main course I chose the sirloin steak, which was served with the best peppercorn sauce I’ve ever tasted. My companion’s fish pie was a succulent homemade delight – real comfort food on a chilly autumn evening. We found just enough room to share a sticky toffee pudding with custard and concluded that The Anchor is a great pub that’s well worth a detour.
