At the heart of the pretty market town of Petworth you'll find the delightful pub-restaurant that is The Star. Thanks to two years of hard graft from co-owners Chris and Ryan, and to Ryan's creative passion, leadership and culinary precision in the kitchen, The Star has gone from strength to strength and has its sights firmly set on a coveted AA rosette.

Ryan uses fresh ingredients, locally sourced wherever possible, to create inventive takes on classic pub dishes. An amuse-bouche formed the perfect opening to our meal - a delicious blend of wild mushrooms and black pudding hidden in crisp filo pastry and served with truffle oil mayonnaise. Ham fritters followed, accompanied by a creamy cheese fondue served in a hollowed-out roasted onion whose centre had been made into gorgeous chutney. For the main course, I ordered herb-crusted cannon of lamb, shepherd's pie bonbons and caramelised shallot purée - a dish with a wonderful layering of flavours. My partner went for slow-cooked pork belly, Puy lentils, parsnip purée and breadcrumbed oysters - an unusual and delicious accompaniment - garnished with a vibrant and peppery violet flower.

This playful approach to the cuisine reflects Chris and Ryan's sense of humour: Chris drew my attention to the altitude warning sign outside the restaurant. 'The wine evaporates quickly,' he said with a wink, 'so you'll have to have a large glass'. After sampling the Lanark Lane sauvignon blanc, I had to agree. As well as a wide range of wines, The Star offers well-kept cask ales from Fuller's and some particularly good ciders.

The desserts are a treat well worth sampling too. I highly recommend the dark chocolate delice with homemade milk ice cream, and the light chocolate sponge, layered with kirsch cherries and Chantilly cream.

The candlelit surroundings are as welcoming as its owners and the atmosphere is as delightful as the food, making The Star a pub that earns great acclaim on TripAdvisor and makes visitors most envious of the lucky locals
