The Times deemed it 'one of the top 30 places to have brunch in Britain', and you'll soon see why. A combination of friendly service, quality food and excellent coffee means The Hungry Guest has secured a well-deserved reputation. Recently, the café has launched an evening menu available Thursday to Saturday, which offers light suppers including an enticing selection of pasta dishes, burgers and salads. From autumn 2012, the café will also offer freshly prepared pizzas five nights a week. In keeping with the culinary theme of locality and quality, the chic interior has been designed by a local designer. For warmer days there is an attractive courtyard garden.

No trip here is complete without sampling some of the excellent hand-crafted breads, which feature in many dishes. Loaves are also available from their sister business, just a brief stroll away on Middle Street. The shop offers a delicious selection of their own products including the sausage of the day (at the time of my visit it was utterly delicious local pork and black pudding), in addition to a carefully chosen selection of authentic Italian and Spanish ingredients. The chocolate brownies claimed 'satisfaction guaranteed', so of course my keen critical eye was ready to pick up on any flaws, yet this was promise that was absolutely delivered. Put simply, The Hungry Guest offers top-quality fare made with care using the best local produce, in a lovely town-centre location
