In search of a wonderful traditional inn, we found ourselves about six miles from Chichester in a delightful village called Eartham, contemplating The George. This charming pub has been a public house for over 170 years and boasts a homely, spacious dining area plus a bar where you can eat more informally. The George had just been taken over by new landlords when we visited, and they were the perfect hosts to this pair of hungry travellers. And what a menu they've created - we tried the potted Selsey crab and a cracking chicken liver salad for starters. Then came a succulent burger threaded with beetroot - different and delicious - and cornfed poussin nestled on mild, creamy mash. Later we shared creme brulée with a medley of raspberries and superb gin and pink grapefruit sorbet.

The George is passionate about microbrewery beers - a growing trend. Some of those we tried came from a small brewery in the Cotswolds. Our hosts gave us an enthusiastic overview of their plans for the pub too, which will continue to celebrate all things British including great, locally sourced food. Having retained the essence of a village pub and introduced a fantastic menu, The George offers more than enough to entice locals and tired South Downs trekkers alike.
