The Crate & Apple
In the 18 months that The Crate & Apple has been under its current management, this friendly local has gone from strength to strength, winning several awards in its opening year, and gaining further accolades since. For anyone who has dined at The Crate & Apple this success is hardly surprising – the food is outstanding. We started with a delicious confit three-bird terrine served with pickled onion, red cabbage, fig chutney and granary toast, and a salad bursting with crisp salt and pepper squid and spiced chorizo. For mains, I opted for a succulent 6oz lamb rump with minted pea purée, new potatoes and seasonal vegetables in rich redcurrant jus. My companion ventured into the specials menu, choosing a delectable oxtail and beef suet pudding, roast parsnip purée and creamy mash.
We were impressed by the superb vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options and also by the homemade ice cream, which is freshly made on-site every day. We opted to finish with two classic favourites – a rich sticky toffee pudding and a delectably smooth crème brûlée. For those simply hoping for a casual drink, there are individual wine, gin and cocktail menus with plenty of delicious options to choose from. Guests can enjoy a casual drink in the stunning beer garden, and the courteous staff are always on-hand to offer advice.
