It’s a delight to return to this lovely town pub in Chichester. Conveniently located for the theatre and Chichester town centre, The Crate & Apple has really established itself since my visit last year, gaining much-deserved popularity in the local area. Charlotte and Martin have developed the pub’s reputation and extended their reach with steak nights, music events and an evening for locals each Wednesday.
The food is even more delicious than I remember. Martin’s cooking skills are exemplary and Charlotte always makes you feel welcome with her friendly front-of-house manner. We chose amazing starters of wild boar Scotch egg, and breaded halloumi with delicious aioli dressing. To follow, we tried the pan-fried venison haunch steak and a gorgeous côte de boeuf, with triple-cooked (to perfection) hand-cut chips. Martin prides himself on using local produce and has a real talent for innovative dishes, creative flavour combinations and accomplished presentation to boot. For dessert, we had just enough room for a summer berry crème brûlée with a glaze that cracked reassuringly to reveal the sumptuously creamy texture within. The Crate & Apple takes pub dining to the next level, with outstandingly high-quality food and attractive prices.
