The White Horse
1 High Street, Chilgrove, PO18 9HX
In the heart of the South Downs National Park, the village of Chilgrove is home to the multi-award-winning White Horse. This luxurious country Inn offers exceptional fine dining and accommodation, and grows more popular year on year. Brimming with all the country charm you could ask for, this rural gem adds modern touches to its decor, as well as the food and drink offering. On arrival, we found a quiet spot in the cosy bar area for a quick predinner tipple in the alluring glow of the fire. A broad selection of fine wine is available, and there’s plenty of lager and ale to choose from. Whistles wet, we moved through to the dining room to peruse the tantalising seasonal menu. After much deliberation, we opted to start with the lightly curried pumpkin soup with crème fraîche, and the delectable Chilgrove game terrine with pickled veg and sourdough. For the main course, I chose the magnificently succulent roasted South Downs partridge with cabbage and bacon, game chips and red wine jus. My companion plumped for the exquisite roasted cod accompanied by potato pancake, Avruga caviar velouté and crispy leeks. The dessert menu boasts a gorgeous selection of treats, including coffee crème brûlée with chocolate gelato and sticky ginger pudding, butterscotch sauce and vanilla gelato – how could we resist? With a truly impressive culinary offering and resplendent surroundings, The White Horse is a must-visit country pub.
