The Black Horse Inn is a heavenly slice of English countryside, just off the main road in the tiny village of Byworth. This is more than a simple traditional rural pub - within the wattle-and-daub-walled building is a restaurant bursting with charm and character, and there are some magnificent views overlooking the wild garden and adjoining stream. Jeff Paddock heads the kitchen and has owned the pub since 2007. His carefully constructed menus are built around the availability of locally sourced game, fish, fruit and vegetables, all of which reflect the changing of the seasons.

On our visit on an early summer evening, starters included a delicately presented dish of smoked salmon and crayfish tails with dressed rocket in herb oil. The goat's cheese on rocket and beetroot with balsamic reduction was a top-quality offering, filled with fresh flavours. Cod was the fish of the day, and as such was available in more than one dish across the board. I opted for cod from the regular menu and was delighted when it arrived in a generous beer-battered portion, imaginatively served (with a twist on the traditional newspaper wrapping) and accompanied by succulent garden peas and robust, hand-cut chips. The daily specials selection featured baked cod with ratatouille, which my dining partner plumped for. Again the fish was perfectly cooked and served with fine beans and new potatoes - the whole dish was bursting with a fabulous blend of colours and flavours. A summer lemon posset with fresh strawberries and an apple and almond tart with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream were both exceptional examples of traditional English desserts. The coffee cannot go unmentioned when it is as good as it is here, served in appropriately sized individual cafetiéres.

Front of house manager Katie Dallyn ensures the presentation and service is impeccable, faultless and friendly. The Black Horse provides a superbly English dining experience - one which I would highly recommend.
