We were utterly won over by The Lampet Arms. This quirky pub in the village of Tadmarton offers a welcome that is warm and heartfelt.

Owners Phyllis and Des, who have been running The Lampet Arms for a year, have created a lovely, cosy haven, complete with fireplaces, wall-mounted lamps, painted wood panelling and potted plants. There are four ales on draft - including the Hook Norton Brewery's Hooky - which are very well kept by the knowledgeable bar team.

The food menus offer a range of tempting mains at surprisingly reasonable prices. I selected the fish and chips - a classic dish and a sure measure of any pub's culinary ability. The Lampet Arms passed the test with flying colours; the batter was light, crispy and not at all greasy, and the fish inside soft, flakey and perfectly seasoned. My partner's game pie was everything he wanted it to be - rich and succulent in equal measure. Portions were pleasingly generous, with plenty of chunky chips and fresh vegetables on the side.

The Lampet Arms is a dog-friendly establishment and receives diners from as far afield as London. There are four double guest rooms onsite, as well as a private function room. Traditional games - darts and dominoes - are supplied, and regular quiz nights and music events take place, too
