The Butcher's Arms is the sort of country pub one dreams about - clad in creeper, lots of flowers outside, and even a screen to keep out those pesky wasps. The village is a little way off the main road, so you can sit outside without the traffic fumes spoiling your afternoon pint. Inside, the old beams and warm atmosphere make you feel very welcome indeed.

On the evening of our visit, fish was the predominant theme of the menu (there is no written menu, just a blackboard) so I chose a starter of scallops followed by trout, and my dining partner selected avocado and prawn salad with good-old battered cod and chips as his main course. My scallops were delicious - fried perfectly in butter and garlic - and I really can't recommend them enough. The trout was simply grilled with lemon and herbs and served with mixed vegetables. The fish and chips were all they should be, and retained the spirit of this classic British dish. We ended the meal with pineapple fritters and an apple tart, followed by freshly prepared coffee.

The wine list is expertly put together and fully described by local wine merchant, La Cava Wines. We especially enjoyed the New Zealand sauvignon blanc and the pinot grigio - both at £3.95 a glass. The beers on offer include Hook Norton bitter, Adnams Broadside and Marston's Pedigree. They also host a beer festival in June every year. Landlady Pat Aisthorpe, who is also the chef, has been at the helm for over eight years, and has 26 years' experience in her trade. She has been joined by her partner Terry, who is also fully involved in running a delightful traditional pub. As a claim to fame, the village of Fringford is also known as Candleford Green to millions of Lark Rise fans.

The Butcher's Arms would make a very good refreshment stop for anyone - whether a fan of the Lark Rise to Candleford series, or just looking for a pleasant and friendly venue for lunch or dinner
