This delightful country pub is tucked away in the charming village of Ickham, amid the pretty orchards and fields of the Garden of England. Located just off the A257 from Canterbury, this delightful eating- and-drinking-house is easy to find and difficult to leave. The oak-beamed saloon features a beautiful inglenook fireplace, and is home to a fine range of real ales and a dynamic wine list, soon to include a selection from Kent's very own Chapel Down vineyard in Tenterden. Meals can be taken in the cosy bar area and the comfortable restaurant, as well as in the bright and airy conservatory, which overlooks the large garden and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Diners can expect a varied and extensive menu, offering expertly crafted dishes that are freshly made on the premises and incorporate the best seasonal ingredients available from local suppliers. I chose as my starter the homemade carrot and orange soup, which was deliciously sweet and citrusy and served with a slice of buttered crusty bread. My companion opted for the rich and smooth chicken liver paté, infused with Courvoisier and accompanied by sweet red onion chutney. As it was Sunday, the Kentish leg of lamb was my first choice from the tempting selection of mains, which included loin of pork, free-range chicken and sirloin of beef, all served with a selection of seasonal vegetables and homemade gravy. My companion enjoyed a dish of wonderfully tender roasted salmon, served with a creamy dill and Pernod sauce and crispy roast potatoes - both mains were perfectly cooked and thoroughly enjoyed. The dessert menu also offered a plethora of homemade delights, including Bakewell tart, fruit crumble and banoffee pie, as well as a selection of high-quality ice creams. I chose the creme brulée to finish, which was beautifully creamy and silky in texture. As well as serving excellent food and drink, The Duke William also hosts a popular monthly quiz, and other fun events, including live music nights and cocktail parties, and offers a very warm welcome to all
