The Crab & Winkle Restaurant & Whitstable Fish Market
The Crab & Winkle Restaurant is a must for all seafood-lovers. Overlooking a working harbour, the restaurant boasts beautiful panoramic sea views and outstanding sunsets; guests have claimed that they’ve rarely seen such a magnificent sight. Celebrating 20 years on the harbour, The Crab & Winkle is named after the first steam-driven passenger railway in the world, which first ran from Whitstable Harbour to Canterbury in 1830. This train enabled daytrippers to visit from Canterbury to bathe in the sea and enjoy the wonderful seafood that Whitstable was, and still is, known for.
As The Crab & Winkle is located directly above the Whitstable Fish Market, the restaurant is supplied with a wide range of fresh fish and shellfish, which is served according to your preference. Choose to start with half a dozen oysters, battered, grilled or au naturel – the choice is yours. Alternatively, dive into the starter platter of oysters, winkles, cockles, whelks, prawns and hot smoked salmon, which is also served as a main course with lobster.
The menu includes, all from the sea, whole brown crab, grilled lobster and Thermidor, Dover sole, skate wing and whole sea bass. You’ll find hearty dishes like smoked haddock topped with a poached egg, beer-battered fish and chips and mussels with chips, as well as whole baked bream, halibut and tuna. Whether you choose the prawn curry or the roasted monkfish, you’re in for a treat at The Crab & Winkle.
Located beneath the restaurant lies the fish and food market, where you’ll find the oysters for which Whitstable is famous, alongside a full selection of fresh fish, shellfish, smoked fish and much more. The Fish Market now also includes the Winkle Kitchen, which offers harbourside dining – call in for takeaway cod and chips, breaded king prawns, crab and prawn sandwiches, ice cream and hot and cold drinks.
