Although tucked away off the main Western Road, the vivid blue exterior of this pub is sure to catch your eye - it exudes seaside chic. Sitting in the bar of the affectionately abbreviated PA, the feeling is that of a happy family reunion, one of which you are an integral part. The cosy front-room style is so welcoming that you may be forgiven for asking for a pair of slippers to accompany your locally-brewed cask ale.

The energy and enthusiasm with which John McPherson runs the bar is infectious. Seamlessly flying from one customer to the next, it is clear this man will not rest until everyone is warmly welcomed, fed and watered. Whether you choose to remain in the bar or move to the bright, quirky conservatory for a slightly more formal dining experience, the food maintains that home-from-home feel. With all dishes proudly prepared from scratch by ex-West End chef Phillip Fifton, the contented murmurs of my fellow diners were testament to his skill.

If comfort food is your craving du jour, you can't go wrong with the sausage and mash served with lashings of onion gravy. Mains also include the already famous Prince Arthur beef burger served with a generous portion of perfectly crunchy chips. Tempting puddings, such as crumble of the day with custard, are hard to resist, particularly when priced at a mere £2.85. Sunday lunch is also available, starting at £6.95, making The Prince Arthur outstanding value for money.
