Sitting pretty on the doorstep of Wellington Country Park, visitors to the Jekyll & Hyde are treated to beautiful vistas, and the natural peace found in a true countryside retreat. Inside, the inglenook fire, rustic alcoves and candlelit tables provide a cosy feel, while the staff offer visitors a warm welcome and friendly yet efficient service.
The menu showcases classic comfort food, with daily specials making the most of seasonal produce. My husband started with classic whitebait, before being bowled over by the award-winning steak and Tanglefoot ale pie, which he paired with a pint of the seasonal beer Leaping Legend. I began with the generous potato skins, filled with blue cheese and mushrooms. A lighter main course of chicken, avocado and bacon salad was the perfect thing to follow, the creamy avocado perfectly balanced by the bacon. We rounded off the evening with a mini lemon posset, and seasonal crumble, which was served with custard so delicious I was tempted to lick the plate clean.
While the inside of this 16th-century pub is wonderfully charming, it also boasts a secluded garden, which is the perfect place for a spot of al fresco dining in the sunny months. Visit for yourself and you’ll understand why the Jekyll & Hyde has such a loyal following.
