Located just off the A33 in the beautiful village of Sherfield on Loddon, The Longbridge Mill is the perfect traditional country pub. With its homely decor and welcoming open fires, it is the ideal place to while away an afternoon, or to enjoy a hearty meal. At The Longbridge Mill you can sample a range of cask ales, including the award-winning Timothy Taylors and Ringwood Best Bitter, along with a varied wine list, all available by the glass.

This fabulous traditional pub is a restored flour mill - references dating back as far as 1274 describe a mill here and refer to one 'John the miller'. In 1819 the mill was advertised to let, stating it comprised a 'capital corn mill with two water wheels, four pairs of stones and machinery capable of grinding 30 to 40 loads of wheat a week'. Milling ceased in 1977 when it was beautifully restored. More recently, an internal refurbishment in 2008 transformed it into a stunning destination pub and restaurant.

During our weekend visit, we were treated to a delightful freshly prepared seasonal menu, with chalkboards displaying the daily specials, which included game pie and lamb rack, as well as fish dishes and vegetarian options. Choosing our starters, from a selection including chicken liver paté, baked Camembert and king prawn cocktail, was a tricky task. Fortunately a sharing mezze was also available, offering all of these options and allowing us to sample a range of great flavours.

We had a harder time deciding what to have for our main courses; the extensive menu features pub classics such as fish and chips and sausages and mash, along with signature dishes like five-spiced duck and ham hock. We chose from the daily specials and sampled grilled pork chop with caramelised apples, a brandy and peppercorn sauce, new potatoes and freshly steamed greens, and the halibut steak, which was served on risotto with baby spinach, chorizo and sweet peppers - both were delicious. If you still have room to squeeze in a dessert, you can follow your meal with hearty puds like apple and plum crumble or chocolate brownie with ice cream. We ordered liqueur coffees from the fantastic range available, which were then made at our table by our very attentive waitress. We accompanied these with the cheese platter featuring generous portions of Somerset Brie, Cropwell Bishop Stilton and Dorset mature Cheddar, served with pink lady chutney, celery and classic Bath Oliver biscuits.

The Longbridge Mill seems to be the perfect place for every occasion; its delicious, freshly prepared menu is available all day, offering a range of fantastic meals all complemented by an excellent range of wines and cask ales. On Sundays the pub offers the perfect traditional Sunday roast - choose from roast beef, roast turkey, roast pork, roast lamb and a delicious vegetarian goat's cheese and nut Wellington. The Longbridge Mill is a true gem of a pub, and well worth a visit
