A 300-year-old oak-beamed establishment with open log fires and a warm comfortable atmosphere, the George and Dragon is the ideal location, whether you're on business or courting pleasure. Set in three acres of beautiful land in a tranquil hamlet, Lionel and Paula, who have owned and run this free house for 25 years, have successfully made their mark on this charming part of the countryside.

Their extensive menu features a range of home-cooked dishes, ranging from traditional pies, curries and steaks, to a variety of vegetarian dishes and a tempting selection of desserts. Order the half shoulder of lamb, which is cooked to perfection for four hours in herbs, red wine, garlic and stock and presented with a choice of new potatoes or hand-cut chips - it tastes all the better when you hear that produce is locally sourced where possible. Lionel and Paula strive to offer fresh and enticing dishes, complemented by a range of cask ales and an extensive wine list.

The outdoor seating area provides an excellent excuse to soak up the summer sun, a cold pint or refreshing glass of wine in hand. Located midway between Newbury and Basingstoke, one mile from the A339, the inn offers ten courtyard en-suite bedrooms, some within the converted 17th-Century barn. Beautiful surroundings make for a relaxing short or long-term stay, with tea and coffee facilities, flat-screen televisions, WiFi, and - not forgetting - delicious food, right on your doorstep.
